ABOUT
Alpha Phi International Fraternity is a sisterhood of women that spans the United States and Canada and includes over 160 collegiate chapters and more than 200,000 initiated members. Alpha Phi was founded in 1872 by 10 visionary women, with its original chapter at Syracuse University. Our founders were looking for something bigger than themselves and wanted to stand up to the opposition they faced as women seeking higher education. Alpha Phi was a place for them to support each other, socialize, meet and discuss their goals and obstacles, sympathize with each other about their shared perplexities and to share a tie that united them.
A group of sharp, lively women founded the Gamma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi at University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1958. The successful beginning of our chapter was made possible by a few young women with great dreams and undying dedication to the concept of sisterhood. The continued growth and success of Gamma Sigma is dependent upon future members who hold the same type of dedication and dreams.
The ten original founders of Alpha Phi established an organization founded on the ideals of sisterhood, service, scholarship, leadership, loyalty and character development. Sisters share a commitment to excellence and a strong desire to help one another and their communities. Alpha Phis are leaders, scholars, contributors and lifetime members of a sisterhood that values these traits.
The innovative leadership and organizational practices of Alpha Phi's Founders in 1872 set the spirit for the Alpha Phi of today...a sisterhood that values the past but looks forward to the progress offered by the future. Today, Alpha Phi continues to provide a "tie which unites, a circle of friends" for women young and old all around the world. From hand to hand and heart to heart, we are all grateful and proud of the legacy left to us by our founders.
